Dennis, as I’m sure you’re aware, the PSA test is very controversial. Many people in the medical community say it has too many false positives and false negatives to be a reliable predictor of cancer. It can lead to painful and unnecessary treatments that lead to further painful and unnecessary treatments. I stopped getting PSA tests 15 or 20 years ago, and my doctor at Northwestern University was fine with that. She also stopped giving me the digital rectal exam, which you recommend, because she said it had been proven to be unreliable. Maybe Biden and his aides didn’t know he had a slow-growing prostate cancer. He might have had a PSA test that provided a false negative. Or he might have chosen not to have the test, because of its unreliability. There is not enough evidence to prove another left-wing conspiracy. —John Camper

And yet, too many questions need to be answered. Did you happen to follow the link to Howard's blog? He and I have been discussing this topic for a long time. I tend to agree with him that the prostate business is too quick to pitch expensive tests that can lead to expensive, unnecessary procedures. Both false negatives and false positives are problems. And believe me, I am not recommending rectal exams. Imagine my surprise when my doctor told me to drop drawers for the first one.
