Kamala's campaign strategy borrows from Charles Dickens: "It's the best of times, it's the worst of times."
The masterful opening lines of Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities are among the most recognizable in English literature. They read:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”
It was designed to help explain the paradoxes of the French Revolution. It occurred to me that paradox is a good word to describe what’s happening now, in particular Vice President Kamala Harris’ contradictory and contrary views of public policy.
In that light, Dickens might describe her views as:
The Biden administration has been the best of times. It’s time to turn the page.
I’m progressive. I’m moderate.
I was the last one out of Biden’s office. Hey, it wasn’t me who crafted the deadly pull-out of Afghanistan.
I fixed the border. I will fix the border.
Prices are way too high. Bidenomics is working.
I’m progressive. I’m moderate.
I fully support Israel. I refuse, I refuse to say, to be seen on the same podium as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
I was the last one out of Biden’s office. Hey, it wasn’t me who crafted the deadly pull-out of Afghanistan.
I”m for fracking. F..k fracking.
Illegal immigrants have a right to government healthcare, No one has asked me now what I think. So, I’m not saying.
Defund the police. I was the toughest, most bad ass state attorney general you’ll ever meet.
Ban plastic straws Don’t ban plastic straws.
Make only electric vehicles by 2035. It’s for me to know and you to find out.
Medicare for all. Maybe not.
Hence, for Harris, it has been, “… the season of Darkness, it is the spring of hope, it is the winter of despair,…we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”
One can hope that she’ll clear this up in Tuesday evening’s debate with Donald Trump. I’m not betting she will. I don’t think that she’ll agree to another one. I seriously doubt she’ll have a full-blown press conference. She’ll only give soft-ball interviews to friendly media.
Her road to the presidency appears to have nothing to do with policy issues. One of her supporters said to loud applause, “The country needs a mom.” It’s a mistake for Republicans to argue issues with her. Too many Americans think that issues don’t count.
Her platform is joy. In reality, her platform is a joke.
She beats the Dickens out of me !
