How amazing that the Associated Press has swallowed whole Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ explanation for why she did nothing to stem the flow of illegal migrants across the border.
Her job, she says, is finding the “root causes” of illegal immigration.
The thing is, she failed at that job too.
She went there, spouted the usual liberal credo, came back home and nothing happened.
Here’s how the AP reported (“Presented with rise in border crossings, Kamala Harris chose a long-term approach to the problem.”) her threadbare explanation: It was nuanced.
In grappling with migration, Harris proceeded cautiously. She focused her time and prestige on boosting private investment in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, the so-called Northern Triangle; her goal was to help create jobs to bolster economies and dissuade migrants from making the perilous journey to the United States.
Here’s some more:
A review of Harris’ work on immigration reveals a record that is more nuanced than the one presented by her critics or allies. It also provides insights into how Harris — who took over as the Democratic standard-bearer when Biden dropped out of the presidential race last month — might tackle one of the nation’s most vexing concerns.
Harris was never the “border czar,” or put in charge of border security or halting illegal border crossings, as former President Donald Trump, Republicans and even the occasional media outlet have claimed. Instead, she was tasked in March 2021 with tackling the “root causes” of migration from the Northern Triangle and pushing its leaders — along with Mexico’s — to enforce immigration laws, administration officials said.
Harris’ backers say she demonstrated leadership by leveraging her stature to win investments that might curb migration years down the road.
Okay, DAN MERICA, NICHOLAS RICCARDI AND CHRIS MEGERIAN who wrote this one-sided article and your editors at the AP, just how did Harris succeed in meeting this goal?
Was there more economic development in the countries producing illegal immigrants? Didd she successfully push the leaders of Mexico and Northern Triangle nations to “enforce immigration laws?”
This is garbage reporting and as a retired journalist I know it when I see it.
Oh, but you argue that these advances that “might curb immigration down the road.” Here’s another garbage job of reporting. The problem isn’t to “curb immigration.” It’s to curb illegal immigration. Leaving “illegal” out of the copy reflects badly on the reporters and, perhaps more importantly, the copy editors who are supposed to delete this crap.
Harris’ response will be the standard one: Republicans, ordered by Donald Trump, refused to back a “bi-partisan” comprehensive immigration bill that would have helped solve the problem. Harris and Democrats accused Republicans for refusing to compromise.
A response:
(1) The legislation was bad. It still would allow hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, to continue to cross illegally. In some kind of brain warp, Democrats were trying to make legal all those illegal crossings.
(2) Republicans weren’t the only ones “refusing to compromise.” Republicans made clear what they thought was wrong with the legislation, but Democrats would hear none of it. The ball was in their court and they refused to compromise.
