The given wisdom among Democratic pols, media, operatives and wild-eyed progressives is that Donald Trump would be the easiest Republican presidential candidate to beat.
That’s why they’re cheering the overflowing basket of indictments against the former president, believing that voters will reject a nominee who is facing criminal and civil trials. Or, better, they hope that he is convicted.
Now comes the Colorado supreme court’s flimflam ruling that erases Trump’s appearance on the ballot. Hosanna! Similar suits have been filed in more than a dozen other states. Booya!
Except that after the Colorado court’s action a few Democrats are expressing reservations. Maybe all those attacks on Trump have gone too far. They can read the polls. Every attack on Trump pumps up his support. Every attack confirms that Trump is the victim of an unfair, undemocratic plot. No modern presidential candidate has been a target to such an onslaught.
I’ve long had doubts that Trump could be re-elected. Moderates and independents won’t vote for him. I don’t want him reelected because an egomaniac in the White House scares me. But the blitz now has me questioning my own analysis. Perhaps Trump doesn’t need those voters as his base grows and grows.
I’m inclined to wait for those indictments to play out in court because I believe those chargers are serious. Just as I’m convinced that the investigations into Hunter/Joe/Biden family evidence-based corruption needs to be continued.
All-in-all both parties have put us in danger, but we are likely to face two of the worst presidential candidates in our history.
Again.
