According to Crains Chicago Business some radical nonsense from a “progressive” legislator has been introduced in the Illinois House:
A new bill in Springfield would ban single-family-only zoning across eight cities in Illinois, following similar measures that have passed in Oregon, California and Washington state.
On Feb. 5, state Rep. Kam Buckner introduced the Single-Family Zoning Ban Act, which would prohibit zoning areas exclusively for single-family residential use. The bill would phase in that ban, applying to cities with a population between 100,000 and 500,000 by June 1, 2025, and cities with more than 500,000 residents by June 1, 2026. The Illinois Association of Realtors is reviewing the legislation, a spokesperson told Crain’s.
The Left never really liked the idea of single family homes, especially those in the suburbs. They don’t like lawns, golf courses or spacious homes. They do like mass transit, especially rail. The idea is that people should live in cities, the more densely packed the better. It preserves the environment and reduces the carbon footprint, according to the theory.
One problem, though:
Work patterns have undergone a sea change as many people no longer have to work in the office. They can work from home. This footloose urban form gives people a better chance of living where they want. Progressives don’t want people to do that. They want people to have fewer choices. As long as the “choice” is a two-flat or four-flat in Chicago.
I am grateful every day that we moved to a rural area
They need to rename it the Illinois Meddle-lature
